Fire Safety Practice Plan: What Your Family Needs to Know About Fire Safety

When you start a family, you want to keep everyone safe, from your spouse to your children and pets. As a home owner, one area that many avoid working on is fire safety. Every home needs to have a fire safety plan in place. By learning more about fire safety in Chicago, you can ensure your family will stay safe in the event of a fire in the home.

Every home should have a Chicago fire safety inspection completed. This is usually done when the home is purchased. If you live in an apartment, the building should be inspected on a regular basis by professionals to ensure all exits are well lit, fire extinguishers are in place and smoke detectors as well as sprinklers are working.

But what can you do as a family? How can you ensure everyone is safe? Having a plan for fire safety in Chicago will ensure protection.

Creating a Plan

A safety plan is an organized way for everyone to leave the home in the event of a fire. This plan needs to list all the exits available in the home and a meeting place a safe distance from the home. Take for example a small, one level home with two exits, a front and back door. With this type of home, you will need to practice exiting via both doors and where you will meet if leaving the home due to a fire.

Practicing will help your kids as well as the adults immediately act in the event of a fire. A fire is a dangerous event and can cause fear. By practicing your safety plan on a regular basis, say once a month, your family will know exactly how to react if a fire were to break out in the home.

Practice All Types of Events

With your safety plan, it is important to consider several scenarios. Practice leaving the home through the window in the event of fire outside the door. Talk to your children about recognizing smoke outside their bedroom and what to do if this happens.

You can also practice crawling on the ground as you exit the home. Smoke from a fire will rise. In the event of a fire, you may need to crawl to safety so that you can breathe better while leaving the home. Explain this to your children so they know there is another way to leave the home without breathing in heavy smoke.

By practicing your fire safety plan on a regular basis, you ensure that you have the ability to keep your family safe in the event of a fire. Without regular practice, your family members may panic when it comes to leaving the home when fire is present.

Most people have no idea how to react during a fire or they panic. By practicing your exit, you create a muscle memory within your brain. You know how to react without thinking. This practice takes only a few minutes once a month or so and you can create a way for your family to be safe from a fire.
