Holiday Fire Safety Tips

The season is upon you where all your friends and family gather to celebrate this joyous time of year. It is also a time where heaters are being turned on, candles are lit, and lights are on non-stop in your apartment. It is very important that during this holiday season you remember a few fire safety tips to make sure you’re protected and can truly enjoy this season. Here are a few tips for you to keep in the forefront of your mind as you’re celebrating throughout the next several weeks.

Remember The Candle

While you may have candles lit for creating atmosphere in your home or for making a room smell good, do not forget they are lit. Candles can be the cause of house fires when they are forgotten. Be sure they are not in reach of young children and that you never leave them unattended.

Don’t Forget The Stove

During this season there is lots of cooking going on as well. From baking cookies with your children to enjoying Christmas dinner, your oven is most likely on more than it is off. Make sure that you do not forget to check the stove and oven before retiring for the evening. Also be sure to keep any flammable materials safely away from the stovetop during your festive cooking.

Check The Tree

While most times lights will not cause an issue, if you have a real tree you need to keep an eye on it. Make sure not to let the tree get dry as it can become a fire hazard. Also, check the wires on your lights before using them each year. You want to make sure there won’t be a short that could cause an electrical fire.

Keep Heaters Safe

Since the temperatures have dropped you may have added a space heater to your home. While these can be a great way to keep you warm, they can also cause a tragedy. Be sure there is nothing around the heater that could catch on fire or cause issues. Also, make sure to turn them off if you’re leaving the room or the home.

Don’t Forget Alarms

Make sure you’re checking your smoke alarms once a month as part of your regular fire safety in Chicago. Be sure to run a check and change out batteries if there’s anything going on with the alarm itself. Some of the alarms will need to be changed out as well. That’s where your property manager can come in.

Keeping your family safe and secure this season is easy to do when you keep these fire safety tips in Chicago in your mind. Don’t forget that you can enjoy the season while also being safe.
