4 Fire Safety Rules You Shouldn’t Ignore

When it comes to fire safety, you want to ensure your family and your building is ready no matter what may happen. As a condo association board, it is your job to make sure your residents are informed, and the building is up to code. That’s where Connected Fire comes in. We work with condo associations to ensure they are always in compliance with current Chicago fire safety standards.

One of the things you can do to help your residents stay safe is to have fire safety rules posted and communicated to each owner on a regular basis. Here are four specific rules to make sure you keep in the forefront of your mind at all times:

  • Escape plans are a must – Each resident should have an escape plan in place for whatever situation arises. They should clearly know where the exits are, what to do if they run into obstacles, and contact with someone in the building if they are trapped or don’t come out as they should. Creating an escape plan ahead of time and practicing with family members can mean the difference in safety and a tragedy.
  • Take precautions in the kitchen – One of the leading causes of damage or injuries due to fire is in the kitchen. Tips to keep in mind when using the kitchen are to never leave a stove or microwave unattended, unplug appliances when they are not in use, and keep flammable items away from the stove tops.
  • Learn how a fire extinguisher works – Learning to use a fire extinguisher can help contain a fire and the damage it will cause. Make sure that your residents are informed on how they work and that they are always in proper maintenance. This is part of your Chicago fire safety standards and can cause you to be in non-compliance if they aren’t properly serviced.
  • Smoke alarms should be installed and consistently tested – When you have multiple rooms in the unit, you need multiple smoke alarms installed. Make sure that there are alarms close to all bedrooms, in common areas, and in the kitchen as well. This can help a family contain a fire if it starts or get out in enough time.
